Leg 1 - Tuesday, June 3
Lehigh Valley Classic
85 miles |
|
Today’s 85 mile race got underway in perfect summer-like conditions. The course was comprised of twelve 7.1 mile laps. The first two attacks of the day consisted of BISSELL Pro Cycling Team riders, but none were able to secure a gap on the field and were quickly reabsorbed. With just over 7 laps to go, Tyler Wren (Colavita- Sutter Home) attacked and was able to build up a minute gap; however, Rock Racing and Tecos Trek put forth solid effort to chase him down. The next attack came from Romero (Colavita – Sutter Home) and he was eventually joined by Louder (BMC), Romero (Colavita- Sutter Home), Pipp (Health Net), and Tuft (Symmetrics). The break worked well together and established a minute lead on the peloton. High Road worked the front of the group to bring the gap down. Romero and Tuft sat up, but Pipp and Louder forged ahead. They were eventually joined by a large group of chasers. This new large break did not work well together, and BMC and High Road did significant work to bring the group back. With 1 lap to go, the group was caught on a climb, but attacks and counterattacks continued with a furry. The final group attempting to breakaway consisted of Rollin (Toyota-United), O’bee (Health Net) and Rodriguez (Rock Racing). They built up a slight advantage but were also caught with less than 1 mile to go. The riders were all together going into the final stretch. Yuri Metlushenko (Amore & Vita-McDonald) sprinted to the line and took the win. It was a very active day with many attacks and frequent changes in the lead group. The BISSELL Pro Cycling Team rode well today and stayed out of danger’s way avoiding injury and crashes.
