Reading Classic

The start of the 74 mile Reading Classic was a chaotic one. The race got off to an early start and the team cars and even some riders were not in position. The commissar’s car attempted to organize the race and held the speed at 10MPH; however, the slow speeds did not instill order and a crash resulted. Finally after the first lap, the neutral was lifted and the race got underway. The race was a total of 10 laps with the final three laps being the toughest of the course with 3 ascents up Mt. Penn. There were several large breakaways during the first half of the race as the main group was conserving their energy for the grueling Mt. Penn. The muggy and hot conditions added to the fatigue as the peloton was strung out over the very fast pace. Approaching the first of the final 3 laps, there was a large group off the front; however, as with most large breakaways , the group was too big to last. As the peloton approached Mt. Penn for the first time, Oscar Sevilla (Rock Racing) attacked and got the first KOM. The group came back together, but Sevilla again launched an attack and took the second KOM. Three other riders bridged up to him including Colex (Tecos-Trek), Aldape ( Team Type 1), and Kobzarenko ( Team Type 1). Meanwhile, CSC and High Road led the peloton allowing the group some distance before attempting to close the gap. Charging up Mt. Penn for the final time, Sevilla again surged ahead. He powered up Mt. Penn in the big-ring at speeds of 20MPH and gradually dropped his cohorts. Sevilla dug deep rocketing down the descent and hammering on the flat to take the win. Hagen (High Road) was able to split from the peloton for second. The BISSELL Pro Cycling Team chose to ride a conservative race saving energy for Sunday’s crown jewel, the Philadelphia International Championship.
