Saturday brought the road race which was a pancake flat course loaded with turns. The flat conditions and the prize money at stake led to some fast and very aggressive racing. There were small attacks from the start. A large group of 30 was able to breakaway and build up a 2 minute gap ahead of 2 groups. GC leaders, Tom Zirbel and Chris Horner, and stage winner, Hilton Clarke (Toyota United), were in the 3rd group but eventually closed the gap and rejoined the lead group. Toyota United controlled the lead group until Kelly Benefits took over with a half a lap to go. As Kelly Benefits formed a lead out into the final 90 degree turn, Alex Candelario (Kelly Benefits) lost control and slid out taking other riders down with him including Chris Horner who suffered a broken collarbone. Hilton Clarke was able to ge t around the melee to take the win. Graham Howard and Garrett Peltonen protected Tom to the finish where he got 10th and dropped to 3rd in the GC.
